auto insurance 15219 Each year, more automobiles and drivers hit the highways. With so many vehicles on the road, accidents will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major trial. So how do you know what insurance you need and how much to buy? Liability: Liability pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Higher recommended insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. State law usually sets minimum amounts. Medical payments: This coverage is available in non-no-fault states; it pays despite who may have been at fault. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverage, such as emergency road service and car rental, is also available. truck insurance

Jon Eig: The College Man's Film Guide

You feed them, shelter them, and try to teach them the relative societal value of Janis Joplin and Christine Aguilera. Then it's time for them to go off to college and you realize all the things you forgot to tell them. As we prepare to send my son off to school in a few short months, it hit me suddenly that if it doesn't involve pressing "Start" on the microwave, he can't cook food, and laundry to him is some magic trick that takes place in a part of the house with which he is mostly unfamiliar. So we have an agenda for the summer.

But what I feel most guilty about is not having provided him with the proper grounding in something that should have been easy for me. He just hasn't seen enough culturally significant movies to chat about with his future college classmates. I teach film, and yet he is woefully lacking in the basics. I'm not talking Welles and Godard here. I'm thinking of the core movies that every young man pursuing higher education in 2012 ought to be familiar with.

So as a public service for other parents who, like me, have been negligent, here's a brief filmography. Twenty-five films that ought to be in a young man's lexicon. I have confined myself to movies that came out before 2000, figuring that the young man may well already be familiar with the recent ones.

Horse Feathers (1932, though any early Marx Brothers movie will suffice): The most modern of all early comedy teams, the Paramount films in which they were the leads are the height of comic anarchy. This one centers on college football, so it seems most appropriate.

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965): Moms, leave the room. Hyper violence and mythically-endowed women. And to make it less sexist than later versions of the same formula, it is the mythically-endowed women who are actually performing the hyper violence.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966): Clint Eastwood is very old now. He wasn't always. It took an Italian director, Sergio Leone, to make Westerns cool and Clint a star.

Five Easy Pieces (1970): Jack Nicholson wasn't always old either. Do not watch the diner scene before going to argue with a professor about a grade.

Pink Flamingoes (1972): Dads, join Mom in the other room. Before there was The Human Centipede, there was John Waters, who presented gross-out movies with a twinkle in his eye.

The Godfather (1972): The Magnum Opus. Your father's favorite movie.

Animal House (1978): The Comic Magnum Opus. Your father's other favorite movie.

Halloween (1978): Often imitated, never topped.

Life of Brian (1979): American audiences tend to favor Pythons' Holy Grail. Prove how international you are by favoring the one that the rest of the world prefers. Plus, it has the greatest closing number. You can't help but whistle.

Airplane! (1980): Abrahams/Zuckers were Judd Apatow before there was Judd Apatow. Hard to find anything funnier.

Caddyshack (1980): Depending on where and when you grew up, this might be the most quoted comedy of all time. So it has that going for it.

Diner (1982): The ultimate in male bonding.

Blade Runner (1982): See both original and director's cut so you can take part in the great film school/auteur debate.

Blue Velvet (1986): Top of the list material. Be prepared to argue with your girlfriend over this.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986): It's hard to imagine anyone made it through high school without having seen this, but just in case...

The Naked Gun (1988): If you don't like Airplane! you can skip it. But the other 98 percent will love it, especially convicted thief O. J. Simpson playing a cop.

Goodfellas (1990): The highs and lows of being a made man.

Reservoir Dogs (1992): Where Tarantino began. See it before Pulp Fiction.

Dazed and Confused (1993): Bid a fond farewell to high school. The '70's version of American Graffiti with an unrivaled '70s soundtrack.

Clerks (1994): Where Kevin Smith began. See it before Clerks 2. On second thought, skip Clerks 2.

The Usual Suspects (1995): The coolest of them all. Written by a guy in his 20s who didn't even go to college.

Trainspotting (1996): Just say no.

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998): You will spend some part of your college years pretending to be Jason Statham. Consider this homework.

The Big Lebowski (1998): You will have graduate teaching assistants in college. They will be quoting this movie. More homework.

Fight Club (1999): Quod erat demonstrandum.

That's my list. What have I forgotten? The Summer goes fast.

Egyptians torch Shafiq headquarters as vote triggers violence

CAIRO (Reuters) - An arson attack on the headquarters of one of the two candidates in Egypt's presidential election has marred campaigning for the second round in a vote that has polarized the nation with the choice of an Islamist or Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

Protesters set fire to storage rooms and smashed computers late on Monday at the campaign headquarters of Ahmed Shafiq, a 70-year-old former air force chief and Mubarak official, who was confirmed as a run-off candidate after the first round vote.

His rival is Mohamed Mursi, a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's main Islamist group which controls the biggest bloc in parliament after an earlier election. The deciding presidential vote is on June 16 and 17.

Mursi, 60, drew support from a disciplined group of backers of the Brotherhood, banned under Mubarak, and Shafiq attracted Egyptians who want a strongman to restore law, order and prosperity after 15 months of turmoil since Mubarak's ouster.

Neither won more than a quarter of votes cast in the first round, leaving an agonizing choice for a sizeable portion of the electorate who backed more centrist candidates and do not want a conservative Islamist or an ex-military officer at the helm.

Thousands of Egyptians took to the streets on Monday night in protest after the results of the first round were confirmed by the election committee. Some held up posters of Mursi with a cross over his face. But most were chanting against Shafiq.

Dozens then marched from the protests around Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands played out a drama that toppled Mubarak, to Shafiq's headquarters in the upscale Cairo district of Dokki.

"They seemed to know what they were after and they went directly to the storage rooms and set them on fire using petrol bombs," said Ahmed Abdel Ghani, 30, a member of Shafiq's campaign, surveying a scene of unusable, charred campaign flyers and leaflets scattered on the ground.

The main villa escaped the flames but protesters smashed laptops and computers inside, he said. Daubed on the wall outside the villa were the words: "No to Shafiq, no to feloul," an Arabic word referring to "remnants" of Mubarak's era.

Shafiq has made no secret of his admiration for Mubarak, describing him as a role model after his own father. Protesters threw stones and shoes at him when he voted in Cairo last week.

"We condemn the attack but we still don't know who is behind it and will wait for investigations. But we are continuing our work and path and hopefully all will end well," said one official in the campaign, who asked not to be named.

BLOODY TRANSITION

The flare-up was the latest in an already messy and often bloody transition to democracy since generals took over from Mubarak after a popular uprising forced him out on February 11, 2011. The army has pledged to hand over power by July 1.

Even before the first-round vote, revolutionaries who led the demonstrations that brought down Mubarak had promised to hit the streets if Shafiq progressed in the vote to become president of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Yet any violence could help Shafiq's cause as his strongest card in the race is his promise swiftly to restore law and order, which collapsed after Mubarak's downfall.

Many Egyptians were happy to see the back of Mubarak, yet are now desperate for stability to revive the shattered economy. Shafiq is seen as having the army backing to achieve that.

Both Shafiq and the Brotherhood are now trying to rally support from more centrist voters in the second round. But youth leaders of the uprising fear they would be surrendering their revolution by voting for Mursi or Shafiq and liberals are also deeply uncomfortable with the available candidates.

Liberal and other political groups have often criticized the Brotherhood for being slow to join the anti-Mubarak revolt, acquiescing too quickly to the ruling generals and seeking to dominate the political scene after their parliamentary success.

Mursi's supporters believe Mursi and the Brotherhood, which has a social network with grass-roots support across Egypt, are the best hope for reforming a corrupt state.

"Protests are expected. Not everyone will be satisfied with the result, some will object to it but we hope that the people's choice will be with the revolution," said Fareed Ismail, a senior figure in the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party.

"The situation in Egypt is in a critical and dangerous phase. We must work together so that the revolution isn't lost," he told Reuters.

The Brotherhood denied any role in the attack on Shafiq's headquarters. Other candidates who lost in the first round also condemned the violence.

Hamdeen Sabahy, a leftist candidate who came third in the race and now being courted by the Brotherhood, said in a statement it was the "right of the people to express their opinion provided demonstrations were peaceful".

A Brotherhood source, who asked not to be named, said the Islamist group had prepared a menu of options to tempt rival groups and politicians to its side, including backers of first-round loser and ex-Brotherhood member Abdol Moneim Abol Fotouh.

Until now, fourth-placed Abol Fotouh has called for his supporters to "stand united against the symbols of corruption and oppression" - a reference to Shafiq - but has not explicitly said he would back Mursi.

Like Sabahy, fifth-placed former Arab League chief Amr Moussa, once a favorite, has not backed either candidate.

The ultra-orthodox Salafi Muslim Al-Nour party, which controls the second biggest bloc in parliament and had backed Abol Fotouh, has thrown its weight behind Mursi.

The Brotherhood source said the group has offered: creating a five-member advisory council to advise the president; assigning the posts of prime minister or vice-president to Abol Fotouh and Sabahy; distributing cabinet posts to other parties; and offering compromises on planned laws and on an assembly tasked with drafting a new constitution.

Four candidates complained about the vote conduct but the election committee dismissed all the complaints.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said he was broadly confident about the election process although Carter Center monitors highlighted several irregularities, notably lack of access in the final aggregation of national results.

The Palestinian Nakba: The Resolve of Memory | Ramzy Baroud ...

Ramzy BaroudRamzy BaroudRamzy Baroud -- World News Trust

May 15, 2012 -- Many Palestinians remember and reference al-Nakba, also known as the Catastrophe, on May 15 every year.

The event marks the expulsion of nearly a million Palestinians, while their villages were destroyed. The destruction of Palestine in 1947-48 ushered in the birth of Israel. Older generations relay the harsh and oppressive memory of their collective experience to younger Palestinians, many of whom live their own Nakbas today.

In covering al-Nakba, sympathetic Arab and other media play sad music and show black and white footage of displaced, frightened refugees. They rightly emphasize the concept of Sumud, steadfastness, as they show Palestinian of all ages holding unto the rusty keys of their homes and insisting on their right of return.

Other, less sympathetic media discuss al-Nakba, if at all, as a side note -- a nuisance in the Israeli narrative of a nation's supposedly miraculous birth and its progression to an idyllic oasis of democracy. What such reductionist representations often fail to show is that while al-Nakba started, it never truly finished.

Those who underwent the pain, harm and loss of al-Nakba are yet to receive the justice that was promised to them by the international community. UN Resolution 194 states that ?the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date? (Article 11). Those who wrought this injustice are also yet to achieve their ultimate objectives in Palestine. After all, Israel doesn?t have defined boundaries by accident.

David Ben Gurion, first Prime Minister of Israel, once prophesized that ?the old (refugees) will die and the young will forget.? He spoke with the harshness of a conqueror. Ben Gurion carried out his war plans to the furthest extent possible. Every region in Palestine that was meant to be taken was captured, its people were expelled or massacred in their homes and villages. Ben Guiron "cleansed" the land, but he failed to cleanse Israel?s past. Memory persists.

Ben Gurion referenced my own family?s village -- Beit Daras -- which witnessed three battles and a massacre. In an entry in his diaries on May 12, 1948, he wrote: ?Beit Daras was mortared. Fifty Arabs (were killed). The (villages of) Bashit and Sawafir were occupied. There is mass exodus from nearby areas (neighbors in Majdal). We sustained five dead and 15 wounded. ? (War Diaries, 1947-1949).

More than fifty people were killed in Beit Daras that day. An old Gaza woman, Um Mohammed -- who I discussed in my last book, My Father was a Freedom Fighter -- refers to what is likely the same event:

?The town was under bombardment, and it was surrounded from all directions. There was no way out. The armed men (the Beit Daras fighters) said they were going to check on the road to Isdud, to see if it was open. They moved forward and shot few shots to see if someone would return fire. No one did. But they (the Zionist forces) were hiding and waiting to ambush the people. The armed men returned and told the people to evacuate the women and children. The people went out (including) those who were gathered at my huge house, the family house. There were mostly children and kids in the house. The Jewish (soldiers) let the people get out, and then they whipped them with bombs and machine guns. More people fell than those who were able to run. My sister and I ... started running through the fields; we?d fall and get up. My sister and I escaped together holding each other?s hands. The people who took the main road were either killed or injured. The firing was falling on the people like sand. The bombs from one side and the machine guns from the other.?

Ben Gurion would not necessarily doubt Um Mohammed?s account. He candidly stated: ?Let us not ignore the truth among ourselves ... politically we are the aggressors and they defend themselves.... The country is theirs, because they inhabit it, whereas we want to come here and settle down, and in their view we want to take away from them their country? (as quoted in Chomsky's Fateful Triangle, pp. 91-2).

It is precisely for this reason that neither the old nor the young have forgotten. Every day is another manifestation of the same protracted al-Nakba that has lasted 64 years now. Young people's hardships today are inextricably linked to the violent and horrific uprooting decades ago.

Al-Nakba has also remained an ongoing project through generations of Israeli Zionists. When Ben Gurion died in 1973, current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in his mid-twenties. He was then serving his last year in the Israeli army, and today he rules Israel with a coalition that includes almost three quarters of the Israeli parliament.

Like most Israeli leaders, he continues to contribute to the very discourse by which Palestine was conquered. He speaks of peace, while his soldiers and armed settlers take over Palestinian homes and farms. He makes repeated offers to Palestinians for "unconditional" talks, as he repeats his violent rejection of every Palestinian aspiration. His lobby in Washington is much stronger than ever before. He reigns supreme, as he continues to fulfill the "vision" of early Zionists.

Old keys and deeds of stolen lands attest to the intergenerational experience that is Al-Nakba. Today Palestinians continue to be herded behind military checkpoints. They are denied the right to proper medical care, and their ancient olive trees are ruthlessly bulldozed.

What Israel has not been able to control, however, is the resolve of Palestinians. The prison, the checkpoint and the gun reside in our collective memory in a way that cannot be held captive, controlled, or shot.

In fact, al-Nakba is not a specific date or an estimation of time, but the entirety of those 64 years and counting. The event must not be assigned to the shelves of history, not as long as refugees are still refugees and settlers continue to rob Palestinian land.

As long as Netanyahu speaks the language of Ben Gurion, other "catastrophic" episodes will follow. And as long as Palestinians hold on to their keys and deeds, the old may die but the young will never forget.

Polly Paulusma - Leaves from the Family Tree (2012)

In 2003 Paulusma was happily putting the finishing touches to shed-recorded debut album ?Scissors in my Pocket? when Bjork?s label One Little Indian signed her up and catapulted her round the world for six years, supporting Bob Dylan, Jamie Cullum, Joseph Arthur, Coldplay and many others. Now she?s set up her own label Wild Sound and is releasing her third offering, Leaves from the Family Tree. From humble musical beginnings in a garden shed, Polly Paulusma was signed to Bjork?s label One Little Indian in 2003 and in 2004 released her self-produced, home-shed-recorded debut album Scissors In My Pocket to international critical acclaim. Uncut Magazine gave Scissors In My Pocket **** calling her ?the finest young female British singer-songwriter to emerge over the last 12 months? (in a year that saw Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone step into the limelight). The Independent heralded her ?the most literate songwriter of her generation?. Scissors? was playlisted on BBC Radio 2 and championed by Michael Parkinson and Terry Wogan, to name but a few.

In 2012 (and two children later), Paulusma now releases her third album, Leaves from the Family Tree. She is founder of label Wild Sound and the proud owner of a caravan called Ella (to make touring with her young family a possibility ? but only in the school holidays!). On this joyful third album, she has e-collaborated with folk heroes Adem and Erin McKeown, rock violin diva Anna Phoebe and acclaimed film composer Michael Price of recent Sherlock fame, combining recordings from her garden shed, Pinewood Studios, and everywhere in between to create an insightful representation of the joys and complications of modern family life.

Video Game Review: 'Max Payne 3' is Gaming as Cinematic ...

CHICAGO ? So what?s Max Payne been up to since we last saw him all those years ago? No, not since the horrendous 2008 movie. The movie just doesn?t exist folks. Take a deep breath. It?s been nine years since the last gaming incarnation of Payne. The long wait to the release of ?Max Payne 3? has seen some things change and some stay the same. Payne is still deeply troubled over the murder of his family and still determined to drown his pain in pills and booze, unable to progress and just as unlucky as ever when he does attempt to. But gone is the New York slum-land. It?s been replaced with a vibrant series of Brazilian night clubs and sun-drenched Sao Paulo locations that come as part of the deal when Payne accepts a security position with one Rodrigo Branco. It?s not fun-in-the-sun or anywhere else. It?s deadly stuff that involves the kidnapping of Branco?s wife, Fabiana, and the slow descent of Max Payne into yet another blood-drenched, action-packed series of shootouts and clue hunts.

The change-up in style and environment may not work for some longtime fans. But there are ample rewards for getting with the times here. A lot of the new content has to do with making the game seem more cinematic. You get some scan lines, moving film stock, and, most effective of all, cut scenes that blend into gameplay and vice-versa. The game loads whenever cut scenes run and so there?s no waiting. It all makes for deeper immersion. In poorer hands the game would only hint at this but in this incarnation players get closer to seeing the world through Payne?s eyes than ever before.

It?s a simple point of view to be sure. The narrative is pretty stripped down and your ability to appreciate it will depend a lot on how effective genre tropes are for you. This is film noir meets the gaming world in an explosion of intense violence. In fact, the violence is so intense it bears special mention. The way the game is structured doesn?t really allow you to roam around as freely as a lot of shooters but that?s by design and it?s a big part of what makes the violence so disturbing. Slow motion head shots and the games ever-present kill camera showcase the movement of that last bullet to whatever it hits and the effect is breathtaking. This isn?t violence for violence?s sake but violence as a metaphor for the inner life of one of gaming?s most troubled characters. James McCaffrey?s performance as Payne stands out but on the whole this is an excellent voice cast and one of the best things the game has to offer.

Do be prepared for a ton of cut scenes. For some this is simply going to mute the action too much, but I found it refreshing. This is well-written stuff, and, again, it blends seamlessly. When the action does heat up, it is furious. You have the choice of a single two-handed weapon or one in each hand if you have enough firepower and ammunition. Look for ease of pickup and use from the game?s famous time-warping Bullet Time and Shoot Dodge moves and don?t be afraid to enjoy the way they augment enjoyment of the destroyable environs. There?s literally no end to the amount of chaos you can generate with your firepower. Glass, paper, bits of furniture, etc. Again, this is breathtaking stuff.

Some will argue that Max hasn?t changed enough but I think that?s bunk. He fits into this game perfectly as is. Also, his heath doesn?t regenerate with the passage of gameplay. So, players are forced to work the angles as best they can from the get-go with same sort of steely-eyed determination that has always made Payne so compelling. Does he have a death wish or does he really want to nail the mission? It?s easy to get so caught up that playing either approach has its charms.

Ultimately, single players get about 12 hours of game play but there are Speed Runs, Arcade Modes and Score Challenges after that. Multiplayer is insane and definitely the place that those who want more freedom during play will want to head. Some might find the way the narrative is interwoven here a little complicated but the truth is that this is rich, complex stuff, guaranteed to help almost anyone maintain interest. You could be playing this thing for months before you are ready to move on. The five total rounds in the mode named ?Gang Wars? of bomb defusing, turf-staking, boom-boom-boom, hunting glory are so nuts in fact that you probably won?t remember much about it later. This is almost pure adrenaline and a marked improvement over how a lot of games approach the multiplayer paradigm.

In short, ?Max Payne 3? offers virtually everything anyone could want from a game like this one. Only purists might be left feeling a bit irked. But then again, Payne isn?t exactly the kind of guy you?d call a purist. Duck, suckers, or pick up your guns and stare destiny straight in the eye. Who knows? You might even take a few bastards down with you before it?s time to call it quits.

?Max Payne 3? was developed by Rockstar Vancouver and released by Rockstar Games on May 15, 2012. It is rated M (Mature). The version reviewed was for the Xbox 360 but the title is also available for the?PS3.

Internet Guru Robert Scoble Says Twitter Feels A ... - Business Insider

Google+ isn't getting a lot of fair coverage in the press, says Internet guru Robert Scoble.

While a lot of the tech press has said Google+ is a "ghost town," Scoble says it's actually Twitter's started to feel more like a ghost town.

"Seriously, I know Twitter's not a ghost town, but it sure feels like that because of the usage model there," Scoble said in a post on Google+. "As it has turned into more of an "information utility" and less of a community it feels more and more empty."

Since July of last year, he's gone from 0 to 1.5 million followers on Google Plus, and 13,000 to 261,000 followers on Facebook. But he's only gone from 240,000 followers to 260,000 followers on Twitter.

He said that's because there aren't any noise controls on Twitter, so users are getting overloaded and aren't following more people.

Here are some of the highlights of his argument over on Google+:

So, what's the new social media ghost town? I say it's Twitter. Follower growth has NOT kept up there with the other services, which is telling me something.?

1. That while number of tweets have gone up, people are getting overloaded so they aren't following more people. Why is that? Because there isn't any noise controls on Twitter (Facebook's feed, on my screens, is a LOT more useful than Twitter's feeds).

2. I'm on Google+'s suggested user list, which is gifting me a huge number of followers. But I got up to 230,000 without ever being on that list here. Lots of people are signing up and at least a few ARE sticking around here.

3. Over on Facebook there are ways to get spread around more, and juice its suggested user feature (this is one thing Facebook does better than Twitter or Google+ since this list is algorithmic and doesn't show a single same list to every user), which gets you more users.

4. Facebook juices its subscriber numbers through lists. If you get put on a list with, say, 30,000 followers, all those followers will be added to your follower count.

Watching Shot Can Boost Pain

Subjects who watched a hand being pricked by a needle while they received a gentle electric shock felt more pain than others who watched gentler material. Rose Eveleth reports.

For some, the quick prick of a needle at the doctor?s office is no big deal. For others it can be a nightmare. New research suggests that the difference could lie in what you?re looking at.

Researchers simulated needle pricks by giving participants a little shock to their hand. As they did that, subjects had to watch three different videos. One was of a needle pricking a hand, another was of a Q-tip touching a hand, and the third was just a hand all by its lonesome self.

Subjects who watched the hand being pricked while they were shocked found the pain far more intense than those who watched a Q-tip or nothing at all.

The researchers also tried telling patients which one ? the needle or the Q-tip ? would be more painful. If the patients expected the Q-tip to be worse, they felt worse when watching the Q-tip, and vice versa. The work was published in the journal aptly named Pain. [Marion H?fle et al, Viewing a needle pricking a hand that you perceive as yours enhances unpleasantness of pain]

So the next time you?re at the doctor?s office getting ready for a shot, take the advice often offered by mountain climbers: don?t look down.

Roxio Game Capture ? Peace! Magazine

Roxio, the makers of such great apps like Toast and Roxio Creator have released a new application design to capture real-time gameplay.? This is a hardware and software solution to where your Xbox 360 or PS3 plugs into the GameCAP device, then through to your TV and PC via a USB port.? PC Gamers aren?t left out though, as a software only solution is also being made available to record and posting PC gameplay.

Console Gamers:

Roxio Game Capture is a hardware and software combination for recording and sharing console game play and is priced at $99.99.

  • Roxio Game Capture enables the real-time capture of game play videos from Xbox? 360 and PS3? consoles. Users may play games in full HD on the TV, while recording the content to the PC. The quick-to-set up USB hardware capture device includes component video and stereo audio inputs, and ships with a component, RCA audio, and USB cables*. Users can record game play in 480p and output to AVI, WMV, DivX, and MP4. Still image screen shots can be saved as JPG, PNG, TIFF, BMP or GIF file types.

PC Gamers:

Roxio PC Game Capture is a complete software solution for quickly recording and posting PC game play and is priced at $49.99.

  • Roxio PC Game Capture allows users to record PC game play footage in real-time. Video sequences and still images can be captured in HD at full screen resolutions. The application supports DirectX? 8-10 and OpenGL based PC games. Compared with other offerings, Roxio PC Game Capture not only provides a more complete solution (including features for capturing, editing, and posting in one package), but also enables gamers to spend less time managing and posting files and more time playing.
  • Both Roxio Game Capture and Roxio PC Game Capture ship with an uncomplicated, yet full-featured video editor that lets users turn raw game play footage into an engaging video complete with transitions, commentary, background music tracks, and titles. Gamers can also tap advanced features including a 32-track timeline editor featuring picture-in-picture, animated credits, and special effects capabilities to further personalize their productions. The products include simple upload features for directly posting completed videos to major online communities including Facebook, WeGame, and YouTube.

Setting up the Game Capture is the easiest detail of all.

The Game Capture box doesn?t require power, either, which is a plus for gamers who are tight on electrical sockets near their home theater setup. In order for capturing to commence, however, the included USB cable must be attached to the destination PC.

Roxio provides plenty of connectivity right out of the box.

The included capturing software works great and allows for recording in AVI, WMV, and DIVX file formats. Unfortunately, only customers with a Windows PC will be able to use the software, as Roxio is not currently supporting Mac devices.

Keeping Your Geriatric Cat Healthy | The Purring Post

Cats, like their human counterparts, are prone to the aches, pains, and health issues that seem to come hand-in-hand with advancing age. Unfortunately, as the average lifespan of our cats increases, so does the chance that owners will see age-related issues arise in their senior cats.

As your cat begins to age, your veterinarian will likely start to recommend doing some tests to make certain your cat?s internal organs are functioning as they should. Cats have evolved to hide signs that they are feeling under the weather and these tests can let your veterinarian know that something is wrong with your cat, long before he displays outward signs of illness.

?I recommend that owners have yearly blood work done on their pets if the animal is healthy, and increase that frequency if any clinical signs present themselves or if abnormalities are seen in the blood work,? says Dr. Julie Byron, a small animal internist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana.

According to Dr. Byron, geriatric cat owners should also increase their awareness of how their cat is acting and feeling. It is important to be able to recognize what is normal for your cat so that when there is a change you can recognize it. She explains that a trip to the veterinarian is warranted if your cat is displaying any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Increased or decreased water intake and urination
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Failure to groom
  • Appearance of a growth or mass
  • Any changes in activity level or normal daily habits

Two of the most important tools that a veterinarian uses to start narrowing down the list of possible problems are an accurate history from the owner and a thorough physical exam. Bringing your pet in to the veterinarian is only the first step; it is important to share with your veterinarian any changes and symptoms your cat is displaying.

There are certain conditions that are more common in our elderly cats including renal (kidney) disease, gastrointestinal diseases, arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and neoplasia. With these conditions come certain signs and symptoms that, when seen by an owner or veterinarian, can lead to a quick diagnosis of the problem.

Renal disease is a common issue with senior cats. Subtle changes in your cat?s kidney function can be picked up on the recommended yearly blood work, before any outward symptoms have presented themselves. Since kidney problems often cause symptoms, such as increased water consumption and increased urination, if blood work is not done or if the problem develops rapidly before it can be caught on a routine blood panel, owners may notice they need to fill the water bowl more frequently or that the litter box needs to be emptied more often.

?Owners should understand that while kidney disease is usually a degenerative disease, it is not necessarily a death sentence for the pet,? advises Dr. Byron. ?There are medications and treatments on the market that can greatly increase the cat?s quality of life and delay the progression of the disease.?

An overactive thyroid gland, or hyperthyroidism, is another common problem in the aging cat population. If your cat has an overactive thyroid, you may notice that he is losing weight, even though his appetite may have increased dramatically, or that his sleep-wake cycle has changed. Hyperthyroidism in cats is both easy to diagnose and treat. Unfortunately, if the disease is left untreated or undiagnosed it can lead to cardiac disease, gastrointestinal problems, high blood pressure, blindness, and even death.

The one disease that every cat owner dreads hearing about is neoplasia. Unfortunately, it is a common problem in geriatric cats and is also one that can be incredibly difficult for a veterinarian to diagnose. According to Dr. Byron, it is the ability of cancer to mimic other diseases and include multiple organ systems that makes it so difficult to pinpoint on a diagnostic work-up. In order to diagnose neoplasia, your veterinarian may ask for extensive diagnostic testing, which is necessary in order to rule out and narrow down the list of possible differentials your pet?s symptoms and signs may point to.

While the necessary diagnostic tests can be expensive, if you are interested in pursuing further treatment for your pet, these tests are essential. Your animal?s prognosis and treatment strategy will vary greatly based on the results of these tests and whether a final diagnosis can be made.

Another common disease in aging pets is arthritis. According to Dr. Byron, arthritis in cats is under-diagnosed due to their ability to hide any signs of pain or discomfort. Signs of arthritis in cats can manifest in a variety of ways including decreases in activity level or ability/desire to jump, limping, weakness, and decrease in appetite. If you notice any of these signs do not medicate your pet with human over-the-counter drugs, as these can be very hard for your cat to metabolize and actually may damage their internal organs. There are newer veterinary medications that can be used safely in cats as a long term arthritis treatment that your veterinarian can prescribe.

?Above all, owners need to understand that age itself is not a disease,? explains Dr. Byron ?It just means that your pet has an increased likelihood of experiencing certain problems and illnesses. As veterinarians, we work to combat these problems and ensure that your pet has the best quality of life possible.?

359 elephant tusks smuggled in ship containers

AFP - Getty Images

Some of the seized elephant tusks are displayed Wednesday at a customs warehouse in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

Three shipping containers found in Sri Lanka stuffed with 359 elephant tusks came from Kenya, the Kenya Wildlife Service reported Thursday.

Trading in tusks is illegal, and Sri Lanka seized the cargo on Tuesday after it was detected by scans.

The containers -- which had been declared as only containing plastic waste and teak logs -- were destined for Dubai, India and Guatemala.

A fourth container was detained before it left the country, Kenya's wildlife service said in a statement.

Poaching for elephant ivory and rhino horns has risen dramatically across Africa due to demand from Asia, where ivory is used for ornaments and horns used in traditional medicine.

The news came as the U.S. Senate held a hearing on the problem.

Last year was "the worst" in 23 years of collecting data on ivory seizures, the wildlife monitoring group TRAFFIC said in its report for 2011, with most large seizures coming from ports in Kenya or Tanzania.

The rise, said TRAFFIC's Tom Milliken, reflects "both a rising demand in Asia and the increasing sophistication of the criminal gangs behind the trafficking. Most illegal shipments of African elephant ivory end up in either China or Thailand."

Just days after Rock Center aired Harry Smith's report, "The Last Stand," on the growing epidemic of illegal rhino poaching in South Africa, three of the rhinos featured in the report were attacked by poachers. Rock Center's Harry Smith reports.

Once in Asia, the documentation for illegal shipments is often changed to make it look?like a local re-export, helping to hide its true origin, TRAFFIC stated.

"That?s an indication of the level of sophistication enforcement officers are up against in trying to outwit the criminal masterminds behind this insidious trade," said Milliken. "As most large-scale ivory seizures fail to result in any arrests, I fear the criminals are winning."

On Wednesday, two suspected poachers were shot dead and 32 were arrested, the Kenya Wildlife Service reported, adding that the suspects had shot and wounded an elephant.

The service also listed four other suspected poaching incidents in the last two weeks.

"Tomorrow will be simply too late," Prince William warns as Africa's magnificent wild animals are mercilessly and illegally poached at a rate not seen for decades.

Leaked screenshot points to possible June 20 Galaxy S III launch in Canada

Android Central

Given the state of Galaxy S III pre-release rumors, we're inclined to take this kind of thing with a pinch of salt. However, the latest leaked internal screen obtained by ?MobileSyrup? indicates that Canadians may not have long to wait for Samsung's next big thing. The screen, which appears to show an ad for the phone on some of the leading Canadian carriers, suggests that the launch date may be June 20. However, it's worth remembering that even if this date is accurate now, plans can change, especially when you're coordinating a massive device launch across multiple networks.

What we know for certain is that the Galaxy S III will launch on all the major Canadian networks "this summer," and that it'll pack 4G LTE connectivity where available.

However things pan out in Canada, the Galaxy S III is due to launch in Europe next Wednesday, May 30. A U.S. launch is expected sometime in June. Want more Galaxy S III? Our wealth of launch day reports should have you covered.
