Apps for speech therapy: Category Apps

Category Carousel: This app was developed by speech pathologist Lois Kam Heymann. The app offers nine general categories: transportation, animals, clothing, food, occupations, household, summer, winter and instruments. There are subcategories within animals (birds, bugs, farm, water, jungle, forest), transportation (land, water, sky), clothing (body, head, feet), food (breakfast, desserts, drinks, meat, fruit, vegetables), and household (cleaning, furniture, toys, tools, bathroom, kitchen). The screen for each category presents 12 photographs of items within the category selected. The child needs to drag each of the pictures into the category icon at the top of the screen. Each picture touched is named and when it is dragged into the icon two things happen: the number of items placed into the icon are counted and shown with a number and there is verbal praise. I like the large variety of items presented for some categories. For the categories with many pictures, each time a picture is placed in the icon, new picture appears on the screen so that there are always 12 pictures from which to select until the picture limit is reached. Some categories, such as winter, have only 12 pictures. One has the option of rotating the pictures on the screen by tapping the circular arrows at the bottom.

Although the focus of this app is categories there really is no challenge for the child in this respect. This is because the child does not need to determine the category nor sort pictures according to their categories. The challenge only occurs when the child needs to sort pictures into their subcategories. This app, however, is a good choice for vocabulary learning.

Clean Up Category Sorting: This app focuses on three catgories---foods, toys, and clothing. An item appears on the screen. It is named and the? narrator asks, ?Where does/do the _____go?? The child plays the game by dragging the ?item into either a shopping cart, toy bin, or clothes closet at the bottom of the screen. This limits the learning of categories to three: food, toys, and clothes. A correct answer elicits a positive narrator response such as ?Yah,? ?Way to Go,? or clapping accompanied by a fleeting visual reward of either thumbs up, blue ribbon, star, confetti, or balloons. After all the items have been placed, a score screen shows the percentage correct for the session. There is no database for storing the scores of the children who use the app. This app can also be used for vocabulary building.

Lacking any creative elements, this app is basic and bland. The items that appear on the screen are photos common to the paper materials that have been around for years.

There is also a lot of vocabulary to enhance the learning process. The pictures in Family 1 are more visually similar, making this app easier than Families 2

San Diego Jewish teen wins Google science prize

NEW YORK (JTA) -- An eighth-grader at the San Diego Jewish Academy won a science prize at the second annual Google Science Fair competition.

Jonah Kohn, 14,? won a $25,000 scholarship for his device that uses tactile sound to enhance music for people with hearing loss.

"In essence they said that it has given them the best perception of classical music that they've heard since they lost their hearing," Kohn said, ABC News reported.

Kohn was one of five finalists in his age group from the 15 finalists at the fair, which received thousands of entries from more than 100 countries worldwide.?

Better Way to Coach Employees ? Startuphood

Coaching is more than just giving advice. Use this process to help your team members hone their own behavior.

Coaching is the process of preparing your employees to succeed. Good coaches can create the mental resources, emotional resilience, business skills, and career development that employees need to achieve their goals.

Unfortunately, while coaching is a well-established part of the sports world, it?s a neglected art in the world of business. Much of the time, coaching is relegated to a five-minute conversation at the end of a yearly performance review.

There?s a better way to handle business coaching. Try this five-step process, based on a conversation with Linda Richardson, founder of the huge sales training firm Richardson:

1. Ask for a self-assessment.

Ask the employee?s opinion of a recent event (e.g. meeting, interaction, project) in which the employee was involved. Don?t accept a pat response like, ?Uh, it went fine.? Instead, ask additional questions that help lead employee to discover both the strengths and weaknesses of the employee?s performance. If the employee says something like ?You?re the manager, what do you think?? respond with, ?I want you think this through, then I?ll give my ideas.?

2. Give balanced feedback.

Start with honest praise for the employee?s strengths and your perspective on how those strengths were an asset during the event in question. Then identify one or two key areas where you feel improvement would have helped the employee?s performance. You?re not providing advice, just identifying areas. It?s important to limit the discussion to one or two areas, by the way?more than that and you?ll be ?flooding the engine.?

3. Check for agreement.

Resolve any differences between your understanding of the event and the employee?s perception of the event. Gain agreement on the area where there was a gap between the employee?s performance and how the employee would have liked to have handled the event. It?s crucial to come to agreement at this point, because otherwise the subsequent steps will be off-kilter.

4. Identify the obstacle.

Ask the employee to identify the obstacle that he or she feels is keeping him or her from better performance. Ask what he or she suggests to remove the obstacle, and what might be done to address that aspect. Then provide your perspective on the obstacle and your ideas to address that obstacle. Decide together what needs to be done in order to improve the performance.

5. Set the next step

For each obstacle that?s identified, establish an action step with a time frame for follow-up. Provide positive input and express confidence in the employee?s ability to succeed. Then revisit the issue at the agreed-upon time.

According to Linda, this coaching method works for several reasons:

  • It reduces the amount of time that the manager must spend coaching. Because the coaching process addresses only one or two of the most important skill areas, a typical coaching session need take no more than 15 minutes.
  • It encourages the employee to become more independent, because the employee gradually learns the self-assessment technique and is more likely to buy into the solution.
  • It puts the action items in the hands of the employee, leading your worker to become more independent and more likely to internalize the training into daily habits.
  • It strengthens the relationship between the manager and the employee through mutual success, and builds rapport throughout the entire process.
  • It provides a structure that?s easily followed and can apply to virtually any business situation or problem.
  • It is not confrontational, thereby making it much easier for the manager and employee to participate in the process.

New probe provides vital assist in brain cancer surgery

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Performing surgery to remove a brain tumor requires surgeons to walk a very fine line. If they leave tumor tissue behind, the tumor is likely to regrow; if they cut out too much normal tissue, they could cause permanent brain damage.

"Primary brain tumors look just like brain tissue," says Keith Paulsen, PhD, a professor of biomedical engineering at Thayer School of Engineering and a member of the Cancer Imaging and Radiobiology Research Program at Norris Cotton Cancer Center. "But if you look at them under a particular kind of light, they look much different."

To improve their ability to differentiate between tumor cells and healthy tissue, surgeons can have patients take an oral dose of the chemical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). An enzyme metabolizes ALA, producing the fluorescent protein protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Tumor cells have a higher metabolic rate than normal cells, so they accumulate more PpIX -- and therefore fluoresce, or "glow," when exposed to blue light.

A cancer "flashlight"

But this method was thought to be not sensitive enough to highlight brain tumors that are less metabolically active, like low-grade gliomas. To address this problem, MD-PhD student Pablo Valdes, PhD, and his research mentors -- David Roberts, MD, the chief of neurosurgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and Dr. Paulsen -- used a probe (which they helped develop) that combines violet-blue and white light to simultaneously analyze both the concentration of PpIX and four other tumor biomarkers: PpIX breakdown products, oxygen saturation, hemoglobin concentration, and irregularity of cell shape and size. The probe reads how light travels when it hits the tissue, sends this data to a computer, runs it through an algorithm, and produces a straightforward answer as to whether the tissue is cancerous.

"Our big discovery is that we can use the probe's reading of the fluorescing agent to measure the existence of a low-grade tumor in tissue," says Dr. Paulsen. "The probe is basically an enabling technology to show that information to the surgeon -- a visual aid."

He says that when they first saw the results of using their fluorescing agent and probe on low-grade brain tumors, it was "jaw-dropping. The tumor glowed like lava."

The Thayer/Norris Cotton Cancer Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center team, which has been working on the brain probe for about six years, built on research that was originally conducted in Germany about 15 years ago. But the German research did not focus on low-grade tumors. The assumption, Dr. Paulsen says, was that, due to the blood-brain barrier, low-grade tumors did not have enough PplX and therefore would not fluoresce.

In a pilot study, Roberts operated on 10 patients with gliomas. He used a microscope throughout the surgery to see the fluorescence and used the hand-held probe to evaluate sections of the tissue where the fluorescence was not definitive. After the surgeries were complete, a pathologist evaluated how accurately the probe had identified tumor tissue.

Striking results

The results, published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics, are striking. Diagnoses based on only fluorescence had an accuracy of 64 percent. But when Roberts used the probe as well, the accuracy increased to 94 percent, meaning that Roberts was much more successful in differentiating between tumor tissue and normal tissue. Although the study was small, it introduces a promising method to help surgeons remove only what they want and nothing more.

Dr. Paulsen says that a protocol is in place for a similar study on lung cancer tumors. He thinks the brain probe may have applications for other cancers as well, but for now the research will have to proceed one cancer type at a time.

Scientists bring low frequency, 'first light' to the Jansky Very Large Array

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory scientists from the Radio Astrophysics and Sensing Section of the Remote Sensing Division in conjunction with radio astronomers and engineers from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), Socorro, N.M., achieve "First Light" image, May 1, 2012, at frequencies below 1-gigahertz (GHz) on the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA).

Through the combined expertise of NRL and NRAO scientists and engineers, a new, modern, wide-band receiver system has been developed and is being deployed onboard the JVLA to enable much more sensitive observations over a much broader frequency range extending from 50 megahertz to 500 megahertz (MHz).

Using the first five of the 27 new very high-frequency (VHF) receivers successfully brought into operation, astronomer Dr. Frazer Owen, NRAO, reached an important milestone, mapping the radio sky at 337 MHz.

"The use of over 100 megahertz of bandwidth in the first image is a dramatic illustration of the breakthrough to instantaneous wideband systems at frequencies below one gigahertz," said Dr. Namir Kassim, section head, NRL Radio Astrophysics Section. "This represents a poorly explored part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is important for ionospheric and astrophysical research and to the Navy's mission for navigation and communications."

This demonstration of interferometric imaging is a key milestone. It is strong verification that the new receivers have the sensitivity, stability, and coherence critical to the needs of the international radio and space science communities, with key benefits for both astronomical and ionospheric science applications.

Although not yet at full capability, by summer 2013 all 27 of the 25-meter telescopes of the JVLA will be outfitted with the new receivers.

In 2011, an upgrade to the receivers on the JVLA sacrificed the observatory's capability for operation at VHF frequencies between 30 MHz and 300 MHz, a shortcoming for the JVLA but a decision made necessary by complex technical and fiscal constraints.

"The loss of low-frequency capability to the world's most powerful radio telescope was a set-back not only to the radio research community, but to continued astrophysics and ionospheric work critical to the needs of Navy communications and navigation," says Dr. Tracy Clarke, NRL radio astronomer. "With the new greatly improved receivers and the demonstration that they work well with the JVLA, scientists are once again able to explore with greater veracity the low-frequency radio bands for high sensitivity astrophysics and high accuracy ionospheric research."

At present, the lack of detailed understanding of the structure of the ionosphere has been a major limiting factor in the ultimate accuracy of GPS measurements, even in times of a relatively quiet ionosphere. This new capability will open previously, poorly explored regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to astrophysical and ionospheric communities, providing high-resolution images of celestial radio emitters and subsequently opening a new area of ionospheric physics, modeling, and prediction.

The Very Large Array (VLA) radio astronomy observatory ? renamed in 2012 for American physicist and radio engineer, Karl Guthe Jansky, who in 1931 discovered radio waves emanating from the Milky Way ? is considered the largest and most capable radio telescope in the world and is funded under cooperative agreement between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI).

In the 1980s, collaboration between NRL and NRAO helped develop the 330 MHz Very Large Array system that has been widely and successfully used in astrophysics and ionospheric science for many years. In the 1990s, NRL, again working closely with NRAO, developed and deployed a narrow band receiver system operating at 74 MHz, so called the '4-band' system for its operating wavelength of nearly 4 meters. While the 4-band system served the international astrophysics and ionospheric communities well for more than 10 years, by the 2000s, the VLA was sorely in need of an upgrade. NRL and NRAO scientists, together with the JVLA's broad international users community are understandably enthusiastic about this newly restored and greatly improved capability becoming fully operational in the coming year.

Isn?t acne minor? Why complicate the issue with something that causes a worse problem? BOULDER, CO (July 18, 2012) -- A new report released today by the National Education Policy Center (NEPC) at the University of Colorado shows that students at K12 Inc., the nation?s largest virtual school company, are falling further behind in reading and math scores than students in brick-and-mortar schools.

These virtual schools students are also less likely to remain at their schools for the full year, and the schools have low graduation rates. ?Our in-depth look into K12 Inc. raises enormous red flags,? said NEPC Director Kevin Welner.

The report?s findings will be presented in Washington today to a national meeting of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), where the report?s lead author, Dr. Gary Miron, is scheduled to debate Dr. Susan Patrick, president and CEO of the International Association for K?12 Online Learning. The report is titled, Understanding and Improving Full-Time Virtual Schools.

?Our findings are clear,? said Miron, an NEPC fellow, ?Children who enroll in a K12 Inc. cyberschool, who receive full-time instruction in front of a computer instead of in a classroom with a live teacher and other students, are more likely to fall behind in reading and math. These children are also more likely to move between schools or leave school altogether ? and the cyberschool is less likely to meet federal education standards.?

K12 Inc. schools generally operate on less public revenue, but they have considerable cost savings, says Miron. They devote minimal or no resources to facilities, operations, and transportation. These schools also have more students per teacher and pay less for teacher salaries and benefits than brick-and-mortar schools.

?Computer-assisted learning has tremendous potential,? said Miron. ?But at present, our research shows that virtual schools such as those operated by K12 Inc. are not working effectively. States should not grow full-time virtual schools until they have evidence of success. Most immediately, we need to better understand why the performance of these schools suffers and how it can be improved.?
Student performance results from the current study are clearly in line with the existing body of evidence, which includes state evaluations and audits of virtual schools in five states as well as a more rigorous study of student learning in Pennsylvania virtual charter schools conducted by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University. CREDO?s study found virtual-school students ended up with learning gains that were ?significantly worse? than students in traditional charters and public schools.

Miron and co-author Jessica L. Urschel, a doctoral student at Western Michigan University, analyzed federal and state data sets for revenue, expenditures, and student performance. In terms of student demographics and school performance data, the researchers studied all of K12?s 48 full-time virtual schools. In terms of revenues and expenditures, they used a federal data set that includes seven K12 Inc. schools from five different states (Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Ohio and Pennsylvania), although these seven schools accounted for almost 60 percent of all of K12 Inc.?s enrollment from 2008-09, which is the most recent year of available finance data.

Key findings include:
? Math scores for K12 Inc.?s students are 14 to 36 percent lower than scores for other students in the states in which the company operates schools.
? Only 27.7 percent of K12 Inc.?s schools reported meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards in 2010-11, compared to 52% for brick-and-mortar schools in the nation as a whole.
? Student attrition is exceptionally high in K12 Inc. and other virtual schools. Many families appear to approach the virtual schools as a temporary service: Data in K12 Inc.?s own school performance report indicate that 31% of parents intend to keep their students enrolled for a year or less, and more than half intend to keep their students enrolled for two years or less.
? K12 Inc.?s schools spend more on overall instructional costs than comparison schools ? including the cost of computer hardware and software, but noticeably less on teachers? salaries and benefits.
? K12 Inc. spends little or nothing on facilities and maintenance, transportation, and food service.
? K12 Inc. enrolls students with disabilities at rates moderately below public school averages, although this enrollment has been increasing, but the company spends half as much per pupil as charter schools overall spend on special education instruction and a third of what districts spend on special education instruction.

?Part of K12?s problem seems to be that it skimps on special education spending and employs few instructors, despite having lower overhead than brick-and-mortar schools,? said the NEPC?s Welner, who is a professor of education policy at the University of Colorado.

Also, students enrolled at K12 Inc. cyberschools are much less likely to remain ? raising inter-connected issues of mobility, attrition and graduation rates.

?Our research highlights a number of significant issues at K12, Inc. schools, and we recognize that these issues are also of concern at other full-time virtual schools,? said Miron. ?We need a better understanding of how this new teaching and learning model can be most effective, so that full-time virtual schools can better serve students and the public school system as a whole.?
